How you balance upside with a players chance of making the
NHL is always interesting. And it's difficult to apply it consistently.
But, Avtsin, for all his failure to adapt in the AHL, still has a high
upside. I realize he doesn't seem to understand what he needs to
do to be a professional hockey player. And I would think he's completely lost his confidence for now. But these seem like things that could change quickly, and he's still pretty young.
I don't know what his work-ethic is like in practice, or in the gym,
but at some point he worked hard enough to develop very good skills.
And I personally think loosing confidence makes it harder for athletes
to learn the mental parts of the game, as much as it impairs their
ability to preform the physical parts. So I wouldn't be surprised if,
at some point, he turned it around and became one of our best
Should that happen, I'm going to scream "I told you so" at anyone
who is still talking to me.
