Gulbis, living dangerously once again, wins a second set tie breaker in which Paire lost four out of his five service points, to deuce a close match at a set apiece. Ernests specializes in losing three set matches like this, so we shall see if this time around it will be different.

Ernests breaks for 3-2. His strategy, such as it is, seems to be to keep the ball in play and wait for Paire to have a braincramp which he just did, not playing a Gulbis return of serve hit right at his feet that caught the line....quintessential Gulbis game: in the first three points, going down love-40 in the process, he doesn't touch the ball other than to put it in play (double fault, service winner, double fault); then he, with a little help from Benoit's dubious shot selection, returns to deuce but gives up another potential break point on a poor shot at net, before playing brilliantly to hold serve. Ai yi yi....now serving for match at 5-4....easy service game, and Ernests lives to play another day.

That clay looked awfully quick.
