Interesting that Semin accepted a 1-year $7m offer.

Two hypotheses:

1. GMs are really wary of him, and the only offers on the table are either crap money/medium term or 1-year payday (i.e. Carolina) and he chose the 1-year payday.


2. as indicated by his lack of interest in the KHL, he truly is looking for something beyond the money and Carolina seemed like the best organizational fit.

I'm not Semin's biggest fan, but #1 doesn't sound too likely to me. I think Pittsburgh and/or Detroit would have both the desire and the cap space to offer Semin at least a 2- or 3-year big money contract.
