Dean Lombardi: A

Highlights
  • Traded Schenn, Simmonds, and a 2nd for Mike Richards
  • Traded Smyth for Colin Fraser
  • Traded Johnson and a 1st for Jeff Carter
  • Signed Simon Gagne
  • Extended Willie Mitchell for 2 years @ 3.5M
  • Re-signed Drew Doughty for 8 years @ 7M
  • Re-signed Jarret Stoll for 3 years @ 3.2M
  • Replaced Terry Murray with Darryl Sutter
  • Extended Quick for 10 years @ 5.8M

On top of these moves, he also signed Lewis, Richardson, and Martinez to very reasonable deals last offseason, only losing Handzus and Ponikarovsky to FA. During the year, when faced with the team's dismal play, he made the correct call in firing Terry Murray and bringing in Darryl Sutter. The Smyth trade, which was a big mess, turned out to be huge in winning us the Cup, as Colin Fraser's play as well as the rest of the 4th line was solid during the playoffs. The trade for Carter angered some Kings fans, however the depth that DL has built into the organization at defense absorbed the loss of JMFJ and Carter went on to score some huge goals in the playoffs. In this offseason, he kept the entire Cup-winning squad together at an extremely reasonable cap level that gives us plenty of space to make moves when needed. Last, but not least, he addressed the weaknesses in our talent pool with this draft, and grabbed a skilled bunch of forwards such as Tanner Pearson, Nikolai Prokhorin, and Tomas Hyka.

I think the best thing that Lombardi did was his masterful cap management. We have most of our core locked down long-term at outstanding cap hits. There is plenty of room to extend Dustin Brown next season and even if we do have to let a player go, we have the depth or cap room to replace them.
