I never said he was the next Jeff Brown. I did say that Jeff Brown was at the time called - by Neil Smith, no less - "a sure-fire NHLer." That was the actual phrase used right after the 1996 draft. That was also the scouting report on him in the Blueshirt Bulletin, Red Line, etc.
Jeff Brown, who was drafted at #22, couldn't even play at the AHL level and spent his career in the UHL and the beer leagues. So any time someone says that a player is a sure-fire NHLer, take it with a grain of salt.
Considering that about 65% of the players drafted in the late first round fail to make the NHL, you'd think that a sure-fire NHLer wouldn't last all the way there, would he? The odds of any given draftee making the NHL are tremendously overrated on this forum. Hugely so.
Players with worse than 50-50 odds of cracking the NHL are repeatedly called "definite 3rd liners" and "probable 2nd liners". Then the next batch of prospects comes along and everyone forgets the pumping the prior batch got.
