OT: Sidney Crosby

Just for those who haven't been keeping up with the CHL/QMJHL or the Prospects board... SBOB, please keep this thread here. We're all Rangers fans, and in order to be Rangers fans, we have to be hockey fans. Some of us follow deeply, some of us are leisurely. I just want to spread the word.

Sidney Crosby -- for those of you who don't know, he is a 16-year old phenom playing in the QMJHL right now. Wayne Gretzky has said that if anyone is going to break his records, this is the guy. He's eligible for the 2005 draft, and plays center right now.

His Rimouski team won 7-4 last night, he notched a hat trick and two assists. In 30 games this season, he has 30 goals, 42 assists, 72 points. He's 20 points ahead of the second place Dany Roussin (24G, 28A, 52P in 28 GP), and 45 points ahead of the second place rookie Alexandre Blais (14G, 13A, 27P in 32 GP).

For comparison's sake, Mario Lemieux scored 30 goals, 66 assists, 96 points in 64 games as a 16-year old rookie in the Q. Of course, Mario added 84- and 133-goal seasons (as well as 184- and 282-point seasons) over the next two years, so Sidney still has a ways to go. However, looking at both at 16 years of age, it's hard not to get excited about a player like that.

He's on pace for 82 goals and 115 assists for 197 points as a 16-year old rookie.

It's too early to tell if he'll ever be as good as Mario or Wayne, or even say, Markus Naslund, but keep an eye out for him. He's the LeBron James of the NHL.

EDIT: He scored a goal a few nights ago that created alot of controversy, especially after what Don Cherry said about him, and for those of you who want to see it, here it is:
