In what way does trading relatviely young top pairing defenceman for old vets improve the quality of the Flames now or into the future?

Stempniak who is Calgary current #2 RW scores pretty consistently at .50 PPG. While Franzen is closer to .65PPG. So yes you have an upgrade there. Is that upgrade worth giving up JBO for an older player unfit for a rebuilding team? No.

The Flames also have Baertschi coming in, and hopefully working his way up to #2 RW in the next year or two. So once again, 32 year old Franzen addresses the Flames needs how?
