That may be true but FWIW, Carlyle had done some soul searching during his time away from coaching to become more 'player friendly'. One of the first things he did was patch up his relationship with Joffrey Lupul after Lupul made a comment about how Carlyle misused him in Anaheim (not trying him at LW).
“Lupes made a comment . . . that I didn’t use him correctly in Anaheim. And he was right. I made the mistake at that time,” Carlyle said. “I take responsibility for that. I’ve talked to Joffrey Lupul about it. That is water under the bridge. He’s a top-six forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He’s having a career year. And good for him.”
