We didn't have any problem shoving the gold medal count in the American's faces during Vancouver 2010. 1976 was the last time team Canada took home less than 3 golds. I'm not disappointed in the individual athlete's for 'only' winning bronze or silver, I'm just disappointed in Canada's overall gold medal haul.
Technically, the IOC doesn't rank countries at all and have consistently reiterated that tabulating gold medals is completely arbitrary.

I'm pretty sure the rankings they release today owe themselves to media pressure back in the 90s (Atlanta?), and before then the IOC didn't even keep count of total medals won.
