I think that was exactly the case. They came to us and we probably thought about it since we were desperate. But we probably wouldn't have had to pay anything for him. It would've been a dump.
Yup, PG calls him back and basically wants to dump Cammy because he's upset with him. And he does it rashly and only asks for a 2nd and some middling prospects to come back.
How could other GMs know? It was done in less than a day. A knee jerk move that was us cutting off our nose to spite the face.
The trade WAS bad. It's a question of opportunity cost. What we COULD'VE gotten and some teams out there were desperate for scoring. Cammy had a great postseason rep and would've loved to have had him. Instead we saddle ourselves with another player who we'll have "how do we get rid of this guy" threads about for the next few seasons.
The Hrudey tirade was well before Christmas iirc...
Feaster straight out said that gauthier had called about bourque in the fall (meaning either he didn't watch any game tapes of bourque play, or missed Kelly's rant), and that they said no at the time...
Might be a lie, though PG didn't refute that to my knowledge.
PG got the guy he wanted...
I'd argue targeting bourque was idiotic and reflected terrible pro scouting, but my take on the deal itself is that clammy needed to go (we all saw his attitude, I also heard pretty credible comments that he was just as arrogant in the room as he was in his little rant), and the UFA premium Gainey signed him to combined with his mediocre regular season production would have made his hard to trade to anyone (or at least any team with the budget & cap space to even consider adding him for anything but a mutual "bad contract" exchange)
Getting Holland, and what should prove to be a high 2nd in the 2013 draft, was solid. Sucks that we got stuck si bourque in the process, but Dealing with an underperforming 3M$ player is much easier than a 6M$ unproductive prima donna
