This I have learned:

Never assign the noob of your rec league team to D. With little skating skills--especially backward--they are merely talking pylons.

What my team does is put the noob on the forward line with two experienced players. The noob learns positional play, and the opposition overlooks him, concentrating their defense on the better players of his line, until the overlooked noob is passed the puck and scores, or scores on a rebound. And we've made a teammate for life.
