He was acquired before the previous lockout for pennies on the dollar, but with very high expectations after playing the best hockey of his career in Pittsburgh. He was pretty dreadful after the deal, until the Rangers traded him to MTL in the purge of 2004. Like I said earlier, Kovalev is a very smart player, but he doesn't always choose to play smart. That team was terrible, and you could tell by his actions on the ice that he wasn't exactly inspired to play his best. He spent a lot of time fooling around with the puck and usually seemed to not have his head in the game.
