I know it's a bit of a generalization, but sports superstars typically don't make great coaches because a lot of their ability came naturally. Most good coaches seem to be major/minor league tweeners who had to fight for playing time.

Gretzky and Schmidt jump right out for coaches who struggled

guys like Bylsma, Laviolette, Manuel, Reid, and others come to mind as success stories.

Adam Oates may be the anomaly.
