I wasn't following the Bolts when Ranger was on the team but I think this is a situation where all people can do is respect the guy's decisions and wish him well. I imagine it had to be something fairly serious for him to leave the NHL in the first place and it's pretty likely it was an issue with himself. If we're talking about a personal battle with depression or something along those lines, it was pretty courageous for him to make that decision and walk away before it affected his on-ice performance or even put his life at risk. It also makes sense for him to attempt a return to the game close to home, if those are the issues he was dealing with.

As far as the commitment is concerned, he fulfilled 2 of 3 years and it was a pretty nominal contract (under $1m), and then it appears he took his leave without pay. At least he didn't still collect a paycheque, and as far as his rights are concerned, he probably wouldn't have garnered a large return anyway, seeing as he would have been viewed as a big risk.
