You guys are mistaking core with competent.

Eller is not a core player, he's an asset and he has tons of potential but losing him tomorrow won't really change the outcome of a season; the foundation of this team isn't built on Lars Eller.

Thomas Plekanec - all situation centre, was heavily leaned upon the last three seasons, core
Carey Price - self-explanatory
Josh Gorges - huge on the PK and EV, ate up minutes
PK Subban - played even more minutes than Gorges, all situation player
Max Pacioretty/Erik Cole - The goals flew through them last year, so they oughta be included.

Gionta isn't a core player because he's not relied upon to create as much as Pac or Cole were (could be due to injury but we don't have much to work with). Desharnais isn't a core player because he doesn't play all situations, he's not that great on the draw and he wasn't relied upon at all times. Eller, Bourque, Prust, Moen and so on are self-explanatory.

An interesting consideration is however, Andrei Markov. He was absolutely a core player and our problems were exasperated when he wasn't on the ice.
