I've never used one really. All I know is that if the machine is Pump driven and delivers 15 bar of pressure it should be serviceable. Although many of the cheaper machines have reliability issues.

I've heard mainly good things about the mypressi twist, which uses NO2 cartidges to pull a shot of espresso., but is ~$150.

Also the Aeropress can deliver a stronger cup of coffee (not quite real espresso but close), and is cheap (~$30) and I love it.

Lastly, if you do want to try a Moka pot, get a Stainless steel one if possible. Some say the aluminum is better, but I have one and it took forever for my coffee to not taste like metal. Evidently the Steel ones don't have this issue of 'seasoning' nearly as bad.
