In the late Eighties they use to have 'cards' and you only had so many (something like 22 or 24). Once a card was signed, that player took up a roster spot for the entire year regardless of how many time he played. As a result, there was no motivation to have more than what you needed.

You didn't have to use all of your cards right away - you would keep 1 or 2 open until you needed them (an injury occurs and then you decide which of the extra players you have would be the best fit and sign his card at that time or keep one for a Christmas addition).

It does add an additional dimension to recruiting and GM'ing.
