Is it possible they are showcasing Sørensen (going by Danish spelling as I am Danish myself) to demonstrate he has recovered fully from his injury and then have every intention of trading him early in the season?

It's a new rule of the CHL this year.
If a team have an Euro player drafted in first round NHL in 2012, this team can have 3 Euro on his roster until 14 days after the return of the Euro drafted after NHL camp at the end of the lock out.
