Peca offensively is a shell of himself since the Tucker hit. But not all teams give up on players so quickly. Players can return to form (see: Rucinsky, Martin). And, seems to me, he was a force last night without contributing any offense.
And, if one still sings the praises of one Eric Lindros and the contributions he can
provide to NYR moving forward, seems to me that one would assess Peca in the same light.
When Shapa chimed in with his absurd comment about it being an intent to injure, didn't reply, for obvious reasons.
PS - Larry Brooks wrote a brilliant column today on the NYI / Peca situation. A masterpiece, really.
I blasted Tucker when the original play wnet down and actually felt for the Isles in that situation.I also said how Peca was the guy who shut me up the most in his 1st yr on the Isles when asked who was the player who suprised me the most that year.
That being said I really soured on Peca when he took out that guys knees last year which was only slightly less blatant as the Tucker one and after all the whining that went on from NYI players, management, the fans and even Peca himself I really got turned off that he'd come right back and do the same thing to somebody else. And I don't want to hear any defending that hit because he clearly went in and submarined him with a hipcheck at knee level.
And as you cite Brooks today and his "materpiece" article I suggest you also look at Holik's comments because they ring even more true.
He states that Peca is a guy who likes to come in and rail you when you not looking as he tried to do with Bobby last night before getting knocked silly with the getting the worse end of the collision.
I happened to be watching a Isle game vs Pitt when he did the same exact thing to Mike Wilson, a guy in his own wedding party and it was just viscious, a blindside hit that could end careers.
Plenty of guys have chances to bury guys like that and even if the hits are deemed legal they are the type that can permanently affect careers if not end them entirely.
And I've never defended a Kaspairitis, even a Holik or any of the other guys like that the NYR's have had, especially Ulf.I have no problem with this as it is part of the game but just as I feel with Peca, these type of guys live by the sword and deserve to die by the sword.
If somebody were to take out Kaspairitis with a hit that takes out his knee causing serious injury or rides him into the bopards from behind causing a career ending injury I'd say so be it as that very well could've been Kaspairitis delivering the hit instead of recieving it and when you play this way things have a way of fulfilling the "what goes around comes around" statement and it should.Darius is a target every game and guys are constantly trying to take him out w/viscious hits but he's earned it with his play in the NHL jsut as Peca is earning it if somebody gets him with one of the blindside open ice hits he likes to deliver..
What is so hard to understand about that Trotts. It's a rule in life as well as in sports. You want to defend your hero go ahead but don't tell me he doesn't try and really take people out when he has a chance to.And as I said it's all fine and dandy but it WILL come back and sooner or later somebody is going to nail Mike with another knee on knee(of course it will be accidental :p ) or nail him up high when coming across the ice not seeing a predator coming in waiting to strike.
As for your boy Peca bouncing back keep holding your breathe b/c it isn't happening while he's on LI so just another chapter in the debacle that is the Islanders.2 F'in goals in 50 games? No, absolutely NO life in his game other that a hit here and there. At least he steps up to take the responsibility for this mess as he did with his comments about how he isn't hurting the team and guys on his team only stare at their skate laces when he addresses them.Maybe if his actions sopke up some more and he lead the way with his play his words would have more of an effect but what really seems to be is that Mike is as much of the problem on LI as anybody and I wouldn't be suprised if he wanted out of the team.
And comparing his awaited turnaround to that of Rucinsky has one major flaw.Martin is a cog in our potential success, Mike is suppossed to have reinvented the wheel on LI since his arrival and since he's been dogsh1t since Darcy's hit I'd say the situations are apples and oranges.
If this were a 1st time thing with Peca I'd give him the benefit of the doubt but the guy has a history estabilshed and just 5 minutes before tried to remove Holik's obviously very large head in the same exact manner and even if he wasn't going to take out the knees he was looking to knocj Jamie into next week which is a part of hockey and even legal if the arms are kept down but my ENTIRE point is that guys that do this have a way of it coming back to them and ANY player who plays this style whether NYR, NYI or Colorado Av you deserve to get back what you give out.Period end of story.
Holik hit it dead on"you rarely see him come try and hit you when you make eye contact with him" and he's absolutely right in alot of instances. He lurkes and tries to blindside guys with his openice hits.Legal or not you do that often enough and a target will and should be placed upon you and you better keep your own head up as guys will be looking to return the favor.
I'm sure you be saying the same exact things today had it been Holik taking out Blake's knee in the same type of collision after having tried to remove Peca head jkust minutes before.I'm sure all you Isle fans would be signing the same exact tune right Trotts??
You know that wouldn't be the case.
As for you loving Brooks great article so much I think it totally gives Peca a pass and that's just laughable. There are plenty of character grind guys and ones who play the body but you don't give up 2 high end prospects, pay a guy 5 million, annoint him the savior and Captain who's going to make everything come together after a terrible decade of hockey on LI and then when he plays void of much emotion, energy and most of all skills you have to place the LARGEST amount of blame on that guy!!!
He was the savior year one b/c of his timely goals and great 2 way play but since hasn't been 75% of that guy but it's everybody else not following his lead???
What lead would that be---too pump in 2 F'in goals in 50 games!!!!!!!
I guess you'd agree with his"I'm not the problem' I'm not hurting the team" BS he spewed in the middle of a team tailspin where they are absolutely coming unglued. That's certainly the remarks I'd look for from my Captian if he had produced as Mike has and in the face of such team turmoil!!
