Here is a good explanation on why you will see players signed to NHL two-way deals signing AHL deals to play during the lockout:

Veteran defenseman Matt Taormina said Friday he has verbally agreed to an AHL deal that will allow him to play for the Syracuse Crunch during the NHL lockout.
Taormina needed the pact because he is on a two-way deal with the Lightning and needed to clear NHL waivers before he could be assigned to Syracuse. But the Lightning did not place him on waivers, meaning a new, temporary AHL deal was required to place him in the lower league.
