With what you said and the fact that the surgery was practiced so quickly after the tear was discovered, I assume that the blood that was covering it was protecting the retina.

No, it was not protective. That pooled blood was not being oxygenated. It was stagnant. Surgery was performed as soon as feasible to prevent further detachment. It had to be deferred until the blood receded.
