I usually put a 3-5" wood plug in my sticks even when they are cut down. I have found that it:

- raises the balance point of the stick, making it easier to stick handle
- seems to raise the kick point of the stick, possibly by adding mass up top?
- dampens vibrations making it feel nicer when handling the puck
