Bring them both back. If Plekanec shows he can play in an offensive role, fine. If he shows he can't score to save his life, then we're not completely screwed, we still have Ribeiro.
And before anyone says we can't keep both, or Ribeiro can't play on a 3rd line, think outside the box. Carbo is one of the smartest hockey guys ever. He can innovate a little bit. Nothing says we have to have:
1st line - scoring
2nd line - slgihtly less scoring featuring gigantic center
3rd line - checkers
4th line - muckers / grinders
Why not put together 4 decent lines all capable of scoring? Put a defensive conscience on each line, such as Bonk, Begin, Murray. Then roll 4 lines. Give Ribeiro some PP time.
Doug Weight is Carolina's 3rd line centre, he's far from big, not much of a checker, and no one is giving him the Selke any time soon. Seems to work for Carolina. Buffalo has 4 lines that can score too. Works for them. Montreal will finally have enough offensive threats to do something similar.
I agree and I think this is sort of what we were doing towards the end of the season and start of the playoffs until Koivu's injury. Remember we had:
3 scoring lines with at least 1 defensive presence. Then we had Begin-Bonk-Murray which we used in as an energy line. I think this is what BG will set up for next year. Then he will just matchup lines against the opposition. In the playoffs, he had Plek's line against Staal and matched Koivu's against Brind'amour.
The problem, as I see it, is the lack of size down the middle on our scoring lines. I like Ribs and think he's a player, but Koivu's here for sure, and at this point I think Plekanec brings a better overall game and is cheaper longer. I'd be okay with Mike again, but IMO, given who we already have, I think we'd be better off grabbing a decent but bigger center (preferably with RH shot) for one of our top 3 lines.
