Franson signed a "full season" deal. Most players are signing shorter contracts with Euro teams during the lockout like 1-month or 10 game deals. Most likely (because there was no mention of his exact deal) that is what Kulikov signed and he'll be back when the lockout ends.

Separately, Franson was different because he wasnt being utilized properly with the Leafs and didnt really want to come back knowing he wasnt going to be given a fair chance at a top 6 role. The Leafs were giving good ice time to guys that shouldnt have been ahead of Franson at times (see Komisarek for example). Interesting move by Franson though for sure...guess he's going to force the Leafs into moving him at one point or another.
