1989 Toronto trades their 1991 1st round pick to New Jersey for Tom Kurvers. The first becomes #3 Overall and New Jersey selects Scott Niedermayer.

1996 Toronto trades Sean Haggerty, Darby Hendrickson, Kenny Jonsson and their 1997 first rounder (Roberto Luongo) to the New York Islanders for Wendel Clark, Mathieu Schneider and D.J. King.

On paper this is a very fair deal. However, Clark was a shadow of his former self at this point, Scheinder had some of his worst seasons in Toronto, and DJ King was a Bottom 6 player.

On the other hand, Kenny Jonsson was a solid defenseman for the Islanders and that 1997 first round pick became Roberto Luongo.
