It seems like somebody should have been back there just in case of a turnover.
The way I remember it, and I may be wrong on this, was that Souray jumped ahead when he saw the loose puck (after Kovalev took his hand off his stick and bent over) to try to retrieve it, then collided with the unlooking Kovalev when Kovalev unknowingly veered right into him.
