To say McCarty would have still been skating today at 40 is a pretty bold claim. McCarty was going to break down because of the style he played. The problems off the ice probably didn't help but look at Draper, Maltby, Drake and Holmstrom. Those guys were lower line players and with the exception of Draper none hit 40 still playing. With Draper and Drake they even always had very solid speed to exceptional in the case of Draper so when they lost a step they could stick around. I just don't think McCarty was ever going to be a guy playing into his 40's at least not without people beginning to gripe about his presence.

It was sad to see some of the things that happened to Darren. However, 758 NHL games was a lot for a guy who played his style. He might have got a few more in, but his body was begin to fail him from hockey related injuries and quite frankly the time he missed (kind of forced) patching together his life for the initial comeback was probably the only reason he was healthy enough to make that happen.

Drake would be an interesting guy to ask about the lockout going on. He really never returned to the player he was before the lockout after taking the whole year off. Part of the reason I think Bertuzzi is trying so hard to figure out a way to get overseas. You cannot take the full year off in your late 30's, it is a bad deal.
