He knows that we need a top defenceman and a top center and he has to sign Huet and abby.

Possibly deal abby or keep and platoon with huet and see who takes the job next season.

I just see Gainey in a good position and poised at turning this team into HIS team finally, after weeding through the taters, he will have a NIce bunch ready to play in 06/07

Go Habs Go
A number of question marks remain. For example, who will replace Bulis and score 20 goals? What will Gainey do about Zednik and Bulis? Who will replace the departing Sundstrom? He's not a key player anymore, but he was an experienced utility player who could step in when one of the checkers/penalty killers was injured. Is Downey worth keeping? Are we sure that Kostitsyn, Lapierre, and Ferland are ready? The team would have quite a few rookies and second-year players. Gainey knows he will have to do more than just promote players from Hamilton. Trades? Free agents? A combination of both? You mention getting a top Dman. I'm not optimistic that Redden or Chara will sign with the Habs, but if one of them did, it would be expensive because Gainey would have to win a bidding war. The Habs may have to settle for a #4-5.
