Burke would have kept him if he could, and even said he felt TB could still play and be effective at the NHL level; that the Ducks were merely handcuffed by the cap. Buying out Bertuzzi was the only way to clear enough space and remain a top team. Bertuzzi scored 38 points in 71 games last year, compared to 40 in 68 his one year in Anaheim. Burke would certainly take him - especially at half price.
Bertuzzi also cost the ducks Penner. Overall the Bertuzzi contract was pretty much a disaster for the ducks
