It would be very beneficial strategically for that series to go 7, at least from the Tigers' perspective. Not really because they'd be worn out because both teams have deep bullpens and they'd have a day off anyway.

Game 7 would burn both Matt Cain and Kyle Lohse probably until game 3 of the WS. Whichever team that survives would be without their ace in the opening homestand.

The Cards would run out some combination of Wainright, Carpenter, and maybe Westbrook in games 1-2. The Giants would run out Bumgarner and either Zito or Lincecum. Most of those guys are fully capable of shutting the Tigers down if they're on, but the odds are a lot better that the Tigers at least split against those guys than against Cain or Lohse.
