They may have lost out on Schultz and Gardiner, but they have plenty of prospects who have risen in return.

Adding Schultz was huge for Edmonton, but they're still really lacking in quality defensive prospects. They have Klefbom and Marincin who both project as top 4 and Musil who is very defensive (almost Smid-like), but outside of them and maybe Gernat their pretty weak defensively amongst their young talent. Schultz improves this group a lot.
Just because they draft really well doesn't mean that I can't feel bad for them.

Schultz (3g-2a-5p in his first 3 AHL games and is living up to the hype)
Klefbom 6'3 (Leading the SEL in +/- before he injured his shoulder a few days ago)
Marincin 6'5 (Leading the AHL in plus minus playing top pairing minutes in his AHL rookie season after an impressive CHL campaign)
Musil 6'4 (One of the best defenseman in the WJC last year 5 pts in 7 games to start this season as a defensive dman)
Gernat 6'5 (60gp-9g-46a-55pt +41 in his rookie CHL season)
Teubert 6'4 (long shot but could come around a #6/7)

Keep in mind these guys are all trees aside from Schultz and this is to just name a few, that's a pretty good prospect base....
Exactly, adding guys like Schultz and Klefbom to Smid and Petry = a solid top 4 for many years to come.
