The O-line looks good because they have been playing good. 200+ yards rushing 2 weeks in a row. Sure Griffin gets a good chunk of those yards on scrambles, but Alfred Morris ran for 120 yards today against one of the best defensive fronts in the NFL. He didn't get all those yards on his own, he needs an O-line to get that done. And Griffin had plenty of time to pass in the 1st half. Late in the 2nd he got pressured, but the Giants knew the Skins needed to pass so they pinned their ears back. Still, 2 of the 3 sacks given up were due to good coverage.
And there is a reason why the Shanahans prefer a mobile QB to run their offense. Because the zone blocking scheme for running the ball they prefer requires O-lineman to be mobile, and that means O-lineman that don't excel at pass blocking for long periods of time because they are smaller/thinner. There is always going to be a balancing act for a zone blocking O-line. Hence why the QB behind it needs to be able to escape.
Based on all that I think the current Skins O-line will only get better as the season goes on, so long as all 5 stay healthy. The chemistry between the 5 of them will only get better, and both the O-line and Griffin will get used to one another. As that happens Griffin will be able to more effectively bide time to make plays.
Having said all that, Polumbus is truely just a bandaide/depth guy who has to start. He has done a great job so far for him, but the Skins need a guy with more physical skills on the edge then what Polumbus can provide. For now, with a TE helping from time to time, he will do.
Finally, what is lost in the Griffin/Alfred Morris love fest in the local media is the play of Trent Williams. IMO, he is putting forth a pro-bowl effort so far. He made Jared Allen his ***** last week, and he has handled who ever has lined up against him so far this season. As a former O-lineman and O-line coach it has been a pleasure watching him so far this season. Light and agile on his feet in pass pro, and devestating in space on run plays. A legit NFL left tackle and will only get better, I hope.
