I'm not saying the coaching's blameless, but if we're using 2011's march to the playoffs as evidence of defensive aptitude, by the same token DB obviously coached that team too. Last year, I don't think DB told Martin to go into the corners like he had eggs in his pocket, or told Orpik to go looking for hits at the expense of his responsibilities.
Like I said, we're 1st in the league for goals - what we need is a more effective way to keep pucks out of our net, and better wingers won't mean anything if our top 4 defensemen make the sort of mistakes they were making in the playoffs.
Yeah, we need to hold onto our d prospects until we see who develops into what we need on the back end.
I think giving both Sid and Geno two strong wingers and having the third line actually playing like a defensive line again would go a longer way towards preventing goals than adding Despres to the blueline will. We also hopefully revert the system to closer to the one from 2011 where the team actually played defense instead of focusing on getting the puck out of the zone as fast as possible above all other defensive responsibilities.
