CLB got "now" pieces in the Rick Nash deal because they want to do something now. Not years from now.

The move to get Davidson is very telling. St. Louis brought him in to stabilize management. Then Armstrong emerged from the group to take over in St Louis. The same could happen here. He is the check to Howson... Meaning, I think ownership wants to see some progression now.

Edit: Oh, and Dreger reported them to have talked to Gillis at the draft about Luongo.
Columbus is rebuilding no doubt. The attempt to get better with the big Carter move was a disaster for them.

The Nash trade was mostly about futures BTW.
