The Toronto Maple Leafs haven't picked higher than the top 5 in quite a while... and it looks like they'll be waiting at least one more year.

The Leafs agreed to a trade today that will send their 3rd overall selection in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft to the Edmonton Oilers in a move that will send the Leafs the 7th Overall selection, as well as highly-touted defensive prospect Derrick Pouliot. The Oilers will also receive Toronto's 3rd round selection in this years draft.

"Given the depth of this draft, and the acquisition of Tomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist, we felt this was a deal we could safely make as we see several players between 3 and 10 that project around the same level after speaking with our scouts." Leafs GM TribalPhoenix stated in a conference call this evening.

"Derrick was an 8th overall pick in 2012, and we believe will add yet another mobile, dynamic defenceman to our young stable to go along with the likes of Jake Gardiner, Morgan Rielly, Jesse Blacker, Stuart Percy and Matt Finn. At #7, we have our eyes on a few prospects that we see as being first line contributors down the road. We're very happy with this trade."
Confirm.

ACQUIRE 3RD OVERALL SELECTION IN 2013 ENTRY DRAFT

On the eve of the 2013 Entry Draft in New Jersey, the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs kicked things off with a significant swap of 1st round picks. The Oilers sent Derrick Pouliot and their 7th overall pick to the Maple Leafs for the 3rd overall pick and 63rd overall picks in the draft.

GM Soli gave a brief comment before being shuttled away to a meeting with the Oilers scouting staff.

"We've had high picks before and we have a good handle on their value. The deal came together very quickly. This story is a little unwritten, but I have a feeling that tomorrow we're going to be very happy with the ending."
