The electoral college doesn't do much to combat that. Let's be honest, 90% (made up percentage) of the people who vote have no idea what either candidate stands for. They may know one or two things that they stand for and vote based on that. Someone may vote for someone because of one social or economic issue that they feel strongly for even if that candidate is bad for them in every other way. Many people just go based what they hear on the radio/tv. Others go based on race, heritage, party, etc. Unfortunately, that's how it is when everyone gets a chance to vote.
