I'm sure there must be some, somewhere somewhen, but I'm kind of drawing a blank off the top of my head. Seems like it's more often teams using their excess prospects in deadline-type deals for established players for playoff runs (Tambellini, Grebeshkov from LA, etc).
I know it's a "popular theory", just like "BPA", but in practise does it look like NHL teams ever actually do this?
Having a plethora of any kind of prospects helps you with those deadline type deals, I agree. I don't think it necessarily helps you get a stud prospect at a position you'd rather have, though. So again, when it is all essentially equal, building your organisational depth by considering needs still should factor in.
However, the possibility still exists.
