I think you just describe the EA sports momentum engine/intimidation engine lol. When your team gets out-hit, especially road games I've noticed, suddenly your team turns into a bunch of pylons and nothing works. Try acquiring bigger guys and hit more to get some intimidation/momentum on your side.
p.s.The intimidation/momentum engine seems to turn on If you give up a couple of quick goals in short succession as well. Hope this helps.
