There is never a rational reason for spending more than you can afford.
"Afford" is the key word here. Teams are frequently in a situation where they choose to spend more than they can afford, simply because they can't afford NOT to spend it.

You can deny the connections here till you're blue in the face. But teams have to spend on salary to compete, and that's the truth.
