I think that a lot of the D-men trying to do too much (in the last few years) has been due to Ron Wilson. He insisted D-men try to pinch when they weren't those types of D. That resulted in 5 or 6 odd man breaks the other way every game and the goalies left out to hang. Francois Beauchemin is a perfect example of this.
