You're absolutely right. Once upon a time there were fighters who prided themselves on ducking no one.

You can watch Ali vs Frazier I - III on youtube. Ali vs Cleveland Williams is my favorite. It's the epitome of footwork, timing, unbelievable reflexes, and turning someone into a human speedbag.
