Instead of making a big splash in free agency (rumors were abound that Jason Allison and Adrian Aucoin were going to sign with the Canes in the 05-06 offseason) they make one small level play with Oleg Tverdovsky, brought in some lower level guys (Mike Commodore, Frank Kaberle) and went after Cory Stillman and Ray Whitney when they were cap casualties after missing out on Paul Kariya.
Traded for Sergei Samsonov after he bombed in spectacular fashion in Montreal and Chicago. However the 3 year extension they gave him after that is another matter entirely.
Traded for Jussi Jokinen when he was struggling in Tampa post-Melrose.
Every single one of those moves aside from the Irbe pickup (and he was the starter here for 4 years including the 02 Cup Finals) played a big part in the Canes making at least the Conference Finals within 1 season, and in the case of the 05 offseason and the Ozolinsh trade helped in large part to lead to a Cup.
Rutherford really is the king when it comes to under-the-radar pick-ups.
