Lot's of teams have picked a need in previous drafts and it has worked out great, and vice versa. IMO, in a deep draft like this one, when there isn't much talent seperating the players where we will be picking, you pick a guy that is needed in 2-3 years. Most of the guys picked in the 1st round should be NHL ready in a couple to a few years.
The above makes the most sense. There will always be exceptions (especially in the top 5 or so, picks overall) where you have "can't miss phenoms" available, that a team simply can't ignore. However, where the Hawks have been picking lately, mid to late in the round, that is not applicable. As stated above, there will generally be 2-5 players rated about the same; you pick the one you feel you will need in 2, 3 or even 5 years down the line. As for goaltenders: they're a crap shoot, but sometimes you have to roll the dice. Hawks have not done that, instead waited for later rounds and it hasn't worked out very well recently. Goaltending is arguably our biggest weakness.
