Karlsson's defensive game is underrated because he plays D without much flash or physicality. He plays a positional game, utilizing his quick feet and hands to intercept pucks and force turnovers. He'll never be great at tying guys in the crease or pinning them perfectly against the boards - but he'll also probably never have to be great at those things because of said positioning + quick hands + quick feet.

I'd argue that if Karlsson were a forward, he'd be a Selke contender, too. He certainly has all the tools required of a Selke nominee (backchecking, large number of takeaways, and a great transition game, while still being a threat offensively). Don't think I could see Datsyuk in the running for a Norris as a defender, though.
