2014 PIT 4th round pick

2014 OTT 2nd round pick

In another move this time with the Ottawa Senators, the team has shipped out Matt Niskanen and Tyler Kennedy. The team was able to bring back Zach Smith, top prospect Matt Puempel and a 2nd round pick in the upcoming 2014 draft. "This was a move that made a lot of sense for us. We get a solid young player in Smith who will be an excellent 3rd line Center for a long time. Matt Puempel is a guy who we have high expectations for, and acquiring him just adds to our already deep prospect pool. With the arrival of Dustin Byguflien we had 5 top 4 Defenceman but only 4 spots for them to play in so one of them had to go. Simon Despres fits into our long term plans better than Niskanen did so he became the expendable guy. With a number of star players set to become UFA's this offseason we feel like we have cleared up enough cap space to take a run at maybe one or two big names should anybody hit the UFA market. Overall we are pleased with the deal here in Pittsburgh and we cannot wait to see what Smith and Puempel will be able to do for us."
