Right now, she honestly has no idea what she wants to do. As much as I'd love to do something in SA, I don't see it happening on this trip. Right now I think a San Fran & Seattle combo trip is in the lead for what we'll actually do, but that could change any minute. I think what I'm going to try and float by is maybe flying out to SF, stay a few days, rent a car and drive to Portland, stay a night or two, and then drive up to Seattle. Total driving time won't be too bad, ~13 hours (without traffic) total, and I'm sure the scenery would be great.
i've heard that one's really nice, but haven't done it myself. if you go to seattle (and you have the time) drive the extra couple of hours to vancouver...it's a beautiful city.
if you want another great drive (although his is probably way less convenient)...try calgary to vancouver. the non-stop drive is about 12 hrs (which you wouldn't want to do)...but if you have the time to do things slower the drive takes you through the rockies (and the national parks)...banff (and if you have time you can drive the hour to lake louise), glacier national park, revelstoke.
