cherry picking would be me saying that he played really well down the stretch last year.
gomes has bounced around. he's 32, about a month older than cody ross, and does a lot of things ross does. ross is a "good clubhouse guy" and was apparently looking for a three year deal worth 24-30 million. they just signed cody ross lite for 2/10.
it's not about "cherry picking" a pretty rudimentary statistic these days. it's about identifying that pissing money away with giving cody ross a guaranteed 3 years and 8+ million per would not be a good allocation of money. it's not like ross is michael bourn defensively. he's a hack in the field, gomes is about the same. they bring the same value with the bat, gomes does it cheaper. win/win.
