Stat comparison

I know these are just stats but they are quite interesting comparing Schilling to Vazquez at the same age (27) and seasons (6).

Vazquez GS CG IP H HR BB SO W L ERA WHIP
191 32 1229.1 1235 155 331 1076 64 68 4.16 1.27

Schilling GS CG IP H HR BB SO W L ERA WHIP
65 17 606.2 548 42 187 446 34 29 3.03 1.21

Vazquez pitched many more innings than Schilling did to this point in their careers and it appears Vazquez has been the more accomplished pitcher. Vazquez also has been the better power pitcher at this age, at the expense of hits, HR, and ERA. I know that Schilling really started to become a good pitcher in the next 3-5 years. IF Vazquez can continue his pace, he could be considered as good as Schilling when his career is over.

Vazquez is a workhorse, averaging about 205 innings per year in his first 6 seasons. I am very impressed at what he's done at such a young age. I also believe he has the right makeup to make it in NY, professional and mentally tough (unlike Weaver). I sure hope he continues to pitch as well as he did in Montreal.
