they don't need to cut half the teams, that's an absurd argument. there are enough teams doing well, and only a handful of teams doing terrible. you can keep 30 teams as long as you move some around. get out of phoenix and miami and go back to quebec. you can sustain a second team in the greater toronto area, guaranteed. in hartford even the whale does pretty good, i'm sure an NHL franchise would be fine and there's a lot of people pushing to get one back. you could even EXPAND the league if you did it the right way.
mediation might actually be the worst thing for this. if they really wanted to end the lockout, they would have an arbitrator come in and say that his final decision is binding. a mediator will turn into one side (probably the PA) saying "told you so!" and the NHL continuing to puff its chest out because they won't just decide they're wrong and give in. while i've had hope the whole time, i think this might actually be the last straw and there won't be a season.
