As for a top prospect, even in the middle of the first round, you're likely to get a prospect that is going to be a "top prospect" for at least a couple years.
A team like Toronto who has a long term outlook cannot be trading those types of long term assets for a 26 year old goaltender with zero seasons as a #1.
Nothing to do with risk. Cory Schneider just isn't worth anywhere near that to us. We've already got other unrpoven goaltenders...and can likely get one who comes with far less hype for substantially less valuable assets.
Toronto's looking for a plan B in goal, and has the likes of
MacArthur, Lombardi, Kadri, Ashton, Frattin, mid-round picks, and a couple of other prospects which they're prepared to move for that plan B
. Would we pay a little more for a guy who has shown Schneider's potential? sure.... but at the end of the days he's less proven in a starter's role than James Reimer, and at the end of the day, what a goaltender has done in a #1 role is really what we have to value.
That means his value to Leafs, is simply nowhere near the price of Gardiner and a 1st, protected or not. Disagree? fine. Find another team to deal with. We don't want your goalies at anywhere near the price you're demanding.
This is your problem right here. These players will acquire you nothing of substance if you want to improve. if anything your team will move laterally.
You have to give to get, some fans on both sides of the spectrum don't quite understand that old axiom.
